Where battles were won and lost.. thousands of years of history at your fingertips

Explore hundreds of years of history at Clogh Oughter..
Clogh Oughter Castle stands alone and defiant in the middle of the vast and uninterrupted beauty of the Lough Oughter network of waterways. Part of the historic Kingdom of Breifne, and what is now County Cavan, the castle was once under the control of the Gaelic clan the O’ Rourkes before falling into the hands of the Anglo-Norman William Gorm de Lacy. In 1233, the rival Gaelic clan, the O’Reilly’s clan took possession of the area and completed the castle. They retained it for centuries in the midst of their ongoing conflicts with the O’Rourkes and with members of their own clan.

A visit to the castle can be arranged by contacting Cavan Adventure Centre outside Butlersbridge who can organise a guided boat trip or you can take a canoe or kayak if you so wish.
