Four miles north of the town is Killinkere, the reputed birthplace of American Civil War general, Philip Sheridan. The Killinkere Whit Jamboree takes place in the splendid grounds of Killinkere Leisure Centre over the Whit (June) Bank Holiday weekend. Lough Ramor is the biggest lake in the area at 800 hectares and is regarded as a good coarse and pike fishing destination. Ramor Watersports Club operate a marina at the Lakeside Manor.
