Killeshandra, near Lough Oughter, in the heart of the UNESCO Geopark, is a picturesque village surrounded by water and an angling centre of international renown. Nearby 240-acre Killykeen Forest Park offers walkers, cyclists, anglers and those with a love of nature a scenic and peaceful environment. The 12 Km Killykeen Way greenway links the village and the forest park. Nearby Cavan Adventure Centre offers a range of land and water-based activities including kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding and boat hire. There are several B&Bs, self-catering accommodations and traditional pubs in the area. Food is available in the Loughbawn Hotel.
Attractions such as Cavan Burren Park, the Shannon Pot, Cavan Museum and the WW1 Trench Experience, Florencecourt House and the Marble Arch Caves are within 45 minutes’ drive of Killeshandra. Nearby is the impressive Lough Oughter Castle, sited on an island in the middle of Lough Oughter. Built by the Anglo-Normans in the early 13th century it was soon captured by the O’Reilly clan, the Irish rulers of east Bréifne, who used it as a prison for the duration of the Middle Ages. Owen Roe O’Neill, leader of the anti-English revolt of the 1640s, died here in November 1649. Tours to the Castle can be arranged through Cavan Adventure Centre. The Rath Church in the town indicated the site where a rath or ringfort once existed and from where the town takes its name Cill na Seanratha, meaning the Church of the old Rath or ringfort.
Golfers will enjoy playing the PGA National course at nearby Slieve Russell, Cavan and Farnham Estate Golf Courses, all within 20 minutes of the town.
