Event Series Event Series: Killykeeghan National Nature Reserve

Killykeeghan National Nature Reserve

April 3 @ 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm

Marble Arch Caves

On this leisurely guided walk, learn about Killykeegnaan Nature Reserve which is steeped in folklore and history. Discover the geology of the limestone landscape, its rocks, rivers and mountain. Just a stone’s throw away from the popular Marble Arch Caves and Fermanagh’s most iconic natural feature, Cuilcagh Mountain, Killykeen Nature Reserve provides visitors with panoramic views of the surrounding area.

An area built and carved by sea and ice, and home to a series of human communities for thousands of years, local life continues to this day as people go about their daily lives living on the land. Although life is much different to that of our early ancestors who arrived at Killykeeghan, many traditions remain, a tribute to the rich history and heritage, a legacy left behind. A connection between people and place with determination and persistence, and one which we can enjoy learning about today.

At a glance the surface offers panoramic views which capture the essence of the island county. Breath-taking views of Cuilcagh Mountain, the vast lakelands off in the distance, the small micro-habitats sheltering between green rolling hills and a carpet of limestone grassland. Below lays the perfect ingredients for a world of caves and passages to form. All tell a story, a timeline and sequence of events which shaped our world and the lives of those who call the area home.

This event will also consist of a visit to the Mc Grath cottage.
